Contemporary Issues
40 subjects · 133 books
Critical challenges and pressing issues facing humanity in the modern world, requiring interdisciplinary understanding and urgent attention.
Goals
To develop critical analytical skills for evaluating contemporary global challenges, understanding their interdisciplinary nature and interconnections, and formulating evidence-based approaches to complex societal problems requiring urgent action.
Why these books
Contemporary issues involve competing interests, complex evidence, and strong advocacy from many directions. Citizens are exposed daily to editorials, speeches, books, social media, and data-filled reports — all designed to persuade.
In this environment, informed citizenship requires more than good intentions. It requires intellectual tools. Misinformation and disinformation — amplified by modern information technology — spread rapidly and often wear the appearance of expertise. The first defense is the ability to evaluate claims critically.
Three books provide complementary foundations:
"A Field Guide to Lies" builds core reasoning skills — how to interpret statistics, recognize logical fallacies, and evaluate evidence.
"Calling Bullshit" sharpens data literacy, showing how numbers, charts, and big data can mislead and how to challenge them.
"Foolproof" explores the psychology of misinformation and introduces an “inoculation” approach to building resistance before falsehoods take hold.
Together, they form a practical toolkit: reasoning, quantitative skepticism, and psychological resilience.
